We are proud to offer undergraduate students an unsurpassed, educational experience in leadership training. Our semester program is unique in that it combines four college courses with a “real world” teaching/learning approach, a “study-abroad” component situated in the Dominican Republic, and learning through community service to form our emphasis on learning to lead within the reality of a diverse and global society. These dynamic courses are accredited by the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo – (Recinto de San Francisco de Macorís), worth a total of 13 credits – transferable to colleges throughout the United States. Ultimately, the learning, living and practicing of leadership within an “unfamiliar culture” will expand your sense of agency, provide you with the confidence to bridge any divide, and demand critical assessment of self and the means by which you view those around you and our world’s problems. Why?
1 Often when we remove ourselves from our own cultures, that is, when we travel to an area that is completely different from what we know, we begin to see, understand and learn more about our own culture, i.e., the taken for granted ideas, customs and understandings that we never questioned, but always supported. By seeing these ideas, customs and understandings in a new light, we can begin to envision new possibilities and potentials, not only with those around us, but within ourselves.
2 On a professional level, this program provides the opportunity to develop relationships, friendships and networks with individuals, groups and organizations – developing opportunities for future collaborations within one’s professional work. For instance, education majors who later become teachers can develop further partnerships with DR schools, incorporating classroom activities and exchanges through multi-media, allowing one to create a global classroom.
The theoretical framework of this program is based on solutions and possibilities, with one applying what one learns, evaluating it’s impact, and using this to further develop a vision and understanding that is inclusive, personal and transformative. Using the notion of generativity, we build upon the strengths and talents of all members of society by attempting to release the unrecognized human powers and possibilities within society
